3 Breathing Techniques That Calm Golf Nerves on the Course
· 5 min read · By Present
Your breath is the closest thing you have to a remote control for your nervous system. When the nerves hit and your heart starts to race, you cannot simply decide to be calm, but you can change how you breathe, and the body follows. Here are three simple techniques you can use on the tee, over a putt, or anywhere the pressure shows up.
Why the exhale matters most
The key to all of these is the out-breath. A long, slow exhale activates the part of your nervous system that calms you down. That is why every one of these techniques emphasizes breathing out slowly. When in doubt, make the exhale longer than the inhale, and your body will start to settle within a few breaths.
1. Box breathing
The simplest place to start. Breathe in for a count of four, hold for four, breathe out for four, hold for four. A box. Run two or three rounds on the tee, or one over a putt. It steadies the body in under a minute, and a quiet body swings free. This is the go-to when you feel the nerves building before a shot.
2. Two in, one long out
This is the settle, the breath many of the best putters take without anyone noticing. Take one breath in, then a second right on top of it, filling all the way up. Then one long, slow breath out, and let everything go. It fits perfectly into a practice stroke, and that long exhale drops you into the moment right when you need it, over the ball.
3. The single reset breath
The one you will use most. When there is no time for anything else, take one slow breath in through the nose and let it go, long and easy, before you start your routine. One breath resets everything, and you always have one available. Pair it with your pre-shot routine and it becomes the trigger that starts every good swing.
Make it a habit
These only work under pressure if you have practiced them when it is calm. A few minutes a day is enough to make the long exhale automatic, so that when the shot matters, your body already knows how to settle. Breath is a skill, and it might be the highest-leverage one in golf.
