How to Forget a Bad Shot in Golf Before It Ruins Your Round
· 5 min read · By Present
Everyone hits bad shots. The chunk, the shank, the three-putt, the ball in the water. What separates players is not whether the bad shot happens. It is what they do in the next sixty seconds. One bad shot has never ruined a round. The story we tell about it does, and that is a habit you can change.
Meet the Critic
Right after a bad shot, a voice shows up, loud and certain. You are better than that. You always do this. Here we go again. It helps to give that voice a name and see it for what it is. Call it the Critic. It is not you. It is a heckler in the gallery, and it is almost always wrong about what happens next.
Do not argue, do not suppress
You will not win a debate with the Critic, and pretending you are not frustrated does not work either. The move is neither. You feel the sting for a moment, honestly, and then you do something with your body to close the loop and move on. That something is a short, repeatable reset.
The ten-second reset
Here is the whole thing. One, feel it for a second, that is honest. Two, take one long breath out and let the heat go with it. Three, say a word you have chosen ahead of time, quietly, to yourself. Next. Or, that is behind me. Four, lift your eyes, pick your next target, and walk to the ball tall. Ten seconds, and it is the most valuable ten seconds in your game.
The next shot is a clean page
Here is what the Critic never tells you. The next shot does not know what the last one did. It is brand new. The only way the bad shot touches it is if you carry it there. So you leave it on the last hole, and you give this one the free swing it deserves.
Kindness is a performance skill
Talking to yourself with contempt does not make you tougher, it makes you tight. Speaking to yourself the way you would to your favorite playing partner is not soft, it is how you shoot lower scores. The best players are not the ones who never miss. They are the ones who stopped punishing themselves for it.
One bad shot is an event. A bad round is a story you keep telling. Stop telling it.
Present has a guided session, Letting the Last Shot Go, that trains this reset until it is automatic. Start free at present.golf.
