Meet the Critic: The Voice in Your Head After a Bad Shot

· 5 min read · By Present

You hit a bad one, and before the ball has even landed, a voice starts up. You are better than that. You always do this. Here we go again. Every golfer has it, and left unchecked it turns one bad shot into a bad hole, and one bad hole into a ruined round. The good news is that you can learn to handle that voice, and it starts by seeing it clearly.

Give it a name

The single most useful move is to stop treating that voice as you, and start treating it as a thing. Call it the Critic. Naming it creates a sliver of distance, and in that distance is your freedom. You are no longer the harsh voice. You are the person listening to it, and deciding what to do.

It is a heckler, and it lies

Picture the Critic as a heckler in the gallery. Loud, certain, and almost always wrong about what happens next. It has a selective memory, it remembers every miss and none of the pars. It swears the round is over when the round is very much not over. Once you see it for what it is, an unreliable narrator, its certainty stops being so convincing.

You can hear it without obeying it

You do not have to fight the Critic, and you do not have to pretend it is not there. You just do not have to follow it. You can hear the voice, notice it, and choose not to hand it the pen. That choice, made over and over, is one of the most valuable skills in golf.

Talk to yourself like a partner

Here is a simple test. Would you say to your favorite playing partner what the Critic just said to you? Never. So why accept it from yourself? Speaking to yourself with a little kindness after a mistake is not soft, it is strategic. A calm, encouraged player swings free. A berated one swings scared.

The next shot is a clean page

The next shot does not know what the last one did. It is brand new, and it only inherits the last one if you carry it there. Name the Critic, let the bad shot go, and give the next one the free swing it deserves.

The Critic is not you. It is a heckler in the gallery, and you do not have to hand it the pen.
