The Pre-Shot Routine You Can Actually Practice

· 5 min read · By Present

Most golfers have a swing they have practiced a thousand times, and a pre-shot routine they have never practiced once. That is backwards, and it is why good range swings fall apart on the course. Your routine is the thing that carries you when the pressure is high and the mind gets loud, and like anything else in golf, it only holds up if you have grooved it.

What a routine is actually for

A pre-shot routine is not superstition and it is not a stall. Its real job is to give your mind a job. Every step you run is a step where fear, doubt, and the scoreboard do not get a say. Done well, the routine occupies your attention so completely that there is no room left for the voice that wants to hijack the swing. That is why the players with the most reliable routines are also the calmest under pressure.

The four steps

A simple, repeatable routine has four moves. Find your target. Take one breath. Commit. Let it go. That is the whole thing, and its power is in the sameness. The same four steps on a wedge in your backyard and on the shot to win the match. Sameness is what holds when your heart rate climbs.

Make the target small

This is the step most amateurs skip. Do not aim at the fairway or the green. Aim at one small thing, a single tree, the corner of a bunker, a patch of lighter grass. A small, specific target pulls your attention out of your head and onto the shot, and a busy, aimed mind has no room for doubt.

The one breath that commits you

After you have picked your target and your club, take one slow breath. That breath is the line between deciding and doing. Once you take it, the thinking is over. You walk in, you set up, your eyes go to the target, and you make a free swing at it. If you feel yourself still deliberating over the ball, step off and start the routine again. Never hit a shot you have not committed to.

Practice it off the course

You do not need a range to build your routine. You can rehearse it in your mind, eyes closed, five minutes at a time, until it is automatic. That mental practice is exactly what makes it survive the first tee and the closing hole. The routine you rehearse in the quiet is the routine you get in the noise.

The pre-shot routine is where the shot is really made. The swing just finishes it.
